Fifth Grade Expectations:
Reading:
Fifth grade readers explore rich, complex texts across genres, with a focus on critical thinking and evidence-based analysis.
Students will:
- Analyze theme, tone, and author'spurpose in fiction and nonfiction.
- Compare and contrast multiple texts onsimilar topics.
- Interpret figurative language and word choices.
- Evaluate arguments and reasoning in informational texts.
- Read independently with stamina and reflect through discussion and writing.
Writing:
Writing in 5th grade emphasizes clarity, depth, and strong argumentation. Students refine their voice and organization as they write to communicate ideas effectively.
They will:
- Write cohesive opinion, informative, and narrative essays.
- Support ideas with detailed evidence, facts, and logical reasoning.
- Integrate quotes and sources in research and response writing.
- Strengthen writing through editing, peer review, and revision.
- Apply grammar, sentence variety, and conventions with consistency.
Math:
Fifth grade math extends beyond computation into problem-solving and real-world application. Students engage with abstract concepts and explain their mathematical thinking.
They will:
- Perform operations with multi-digit whole numbers and decimals.
- Add, subtract, multiply, and divide fractions and mixed numbers.
- Graph points and analyze patterns on the coordinate plane.
- Convert units and solve measurement problems.
- Analyze and interpret numerical data using line plots and other visuals.
- Deepen understanding of volume and geometry.

- Monday, November 2, 2026: Deadline to register to test for Mark Twain I.S. 239 (21K239) and District 21 Talent Tests
- Friday, December 11, 2026: Middle School Application Closes
- Wednesday, April 7, 2027: Middle School Offer Release
