4th Grade Classes
Fourth Grade Expectations:
Reading
In 4th grade, students dive into longer, more complex texts and begin to analyze how ideas and themes develop.
They learn to:
- Determine themes and summarize stories or informational texts.
- Use context clues and text structure to understand unfamiliar words.
- Analyze characters, settings, and events with evidence.
- Compare and contrast points of view and accounts of the same topic.
- Read fluently with strong comprehension and vocabulary growth.
Writing
Writing becomes more analytical and focused in 4th grade, with students expanding their use of structure, evidence, and voice.
They will:
- Write well-developed opinion, informative, and narrative pieces.
- Organize ideas clearly using strong introductions, conclusions, and transitions.
- Strengthen writing through peer and self-revision.
- Use grammar and punctuation with increasing accuracy.
- Support ideas with facts, examples, and reasoning.
Math
Fourth grade math challenges students to use multi-step strategies and explain their reasoning.
Key learning includes:
- Mastering multi-digit multiplication and division.
- Understanding factors, multiples, and patterns in numbers.
- Building strong understanding of fractions and decimals.
- Solving word problems involving measurement, time, and area/perimeter.
- Classifying shapes by lines, angles, and symmetry.
- Interpreting data from charts, graphs, and tables.
