Third Grade Expectations:
 
Reading:
In 3rd grade, students shift from learning to read to reading to learn. They explore more complex texts across genres and work on deeper comprehension skills such as:
  • Determining the central message, theme, or purpose of a text.
  • Identifying literal and inferential meaning through text evidence.
  • Comparing characters, settings, and key events.
  • Understanding nonfiction text features and structures.
  • Reading with expression, accuracy, and appropriate pacing.
 
Writing:
Students expand their writing abilities by organizing their thoughts more clearly and supporting their ideas with evidence.
 
They will:
  • Write multi-paragraph narrative, opinion, and informational pieces.
  • Use linking words and phrases to connect ideas.
  • Strengthen writing through planning, revising, and editing.
  • Apply correct grammar, punctuation, and spelling consistently.
  • Support opinions and explanations with reasons, facts, and examples.
