Second Grade Expectations:
 
Reading

In 2nd grade, students build fluency and deepen comprehension by reading a variety of texts such as fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and fables.

They learn to:

  • Identify the main idea and key details.
  • Describe characters and settings using text evidence.
  • Use strategies like predicting. summarizing, and asking questions.
  • Expand vocabulary through context and word analysis.
 
Writing
Students develop their writing skills across three main genres: narrative, opinion, and informational.
 
They work on:
  • Writing organized paragraphs with clear ideas.
  • Using grammar, punctuation, and spelling correctly.
  • Providing reasons or facts to support their writing.
  • Revising and editing their work through the writing process.
 
Math

Second graders strengthen their understanding of numbers and apply math to real-world situations.

Key skills include:

  • Adding and subtracting within 1,000.
  • Understanding place value (hundreds, tens, and ones).
  • Solving one- and two-step word problems.
  • Telling time, counting money, measuring, and working with shapes and graphs.
