First Grade Expectations:
Reading:
- Use letter-sound relationships to figure out new words.
- Read with sufficient accuracy and fluency to support comprehension.
- Read and comprehends grade-level texts independently across a variety of genres (fiction and nonfiction).
- Demonstrate comprehension by referring to text details.
Writing
- Write independently for different tasks, purposes, and audiences (opinion, informative/explanatory, narrative).
- Use details and facts from text in writing to further meaning.
- Revise writing to clarify and add details as needed.
Math
- Building fluency in addition and subtraction, including using strategies for solving problems within 20.
- Gaining a solid understanding of place value, with a focus on grouping numbers into tens and ones.
- Exploring concepts of measurement and working with geometric shapes through composing and decomposing.
